Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Our community is concerned about some of the content of sexuality education programmes, can we have input into the material you will cover?
A. The content of the workshops is completely determined by the school community. Some communities want particular sensitive topics (such as masturbation) covered, others don’t, and I absolutely adhere to each community’s wishes. I provide schools with a detailed outline of each workshop well in advance of the programme and if there are any particular areas of concern we can discuss them to make sure we are both clear about what will be covered with the students. Topics of concern are sometimes raised in the parent seminar, and this is a great opportunity to discuss the rationale behind teaching various topics. If parents have any concerns whatsoever, following the parent seminar I invite those parents to stay on and I take them through the images/activities I share with the students and this usually allays fears.
Q. Are your programmes based on the New Zealand Curriculum?
A. Good Talks' programmes have been developed by drawing on research and advice from a wide range of key academics, organisations and educators in the field of sexuality health and education.
