Values, beliefs and philosophies form the basis of how one lives and works. I am often asked about these aspects of my work. For those of you wanting to delve deeper in to the driving force behind the work that I do, read on...
My Philosophy on Sexuality Education
My belief is that every person has the right to fully understand and appreciate how their amazing body functions. I follow a holistic approach to sexuality education. Sexuality education is a lifelong process and is an inclusive term that covers biology, reproduction, intimacy, whole-body development, sexual identity, decision-making, body image and relationships. Successful and appropriate sexuality education provides people with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to ensure a positive attitude towards sexuality, an ability to take care of their sexual health and to develop healthy interpersonal relationships. Too often I see teenagers completely unprepared for the barrage of sexual images and pressure thrust upon them. Similarly, I see women failing to conceive, not for medical reasons, but through lack of understanding of how their bodies work. Sexual health is often ignored until something “goes wrong” – whether it is an unplanned pregnancy, disease/infection or difficulty in conceiving. Sexuality is an inherent part of all of us: real health and wellbeing can only be reached when we have ownership, knowledge and pride in our whole body.
My Philosophy on Gender in Childhood
The emphasis on gender differences is happening at an increasingly younger age. Corporations and marketers have seized upon the notion that the more "different" they portray girls and boys to be, the more money they can make off parents. As a result, childhood is fast disappearing into a divisive sea of pink and blue. The implications of this are far-reaching as such extreme gender stereotypes place limits on our children's ideas of who they can be, what they can do, and what they should look like. I believe we need to celebrate our children's differences and not place them in narrowly-defined notions of gender.
My Philosophy For Youth Mentoring
I love working with young women and believe it is a real privilege to be invited to be a trusted person in a girl's life. I act as an impartial life-coach, friend and inspirator for young women and together we create a positive proactive path for their life.
